Jan’s Soapbox
I was incredibly frustrated to see Measures 66 & 67 pass. These measures are so clearly a business disincentive. Instead of focusing on the bottom line, we must now focus on the top line to determine how much more taxes we will owe at the end of the year. I can’t begin to fathom why would a business want to locate to Oregon now. Why would they when states like Nevada and Texas have zero business income taxes? Where is the incentive to grow a business and hire employees if it just means more of your time, talents and efforts go to Salem? Will the upper income earners stay in Oregon? Probably not. They may work here and pay Oregon income taxes on their Oregon earning. But if they move across the river, they can remove their much of their income from Oregon's grasp. What does that mean? Once the upper earners retire they can save themselves 11% in retirement income taxes. Imagine if Phil Knight moved to Vancouver & sold some of his stock. Last time, Oregon got $1.2M out of him from a stock sale. If I were Mr. Knight, I would be house hunting about now. I have said this over and over again: We possess the one thing the politicians fear and the special interest cannot buy – our vote! Yet many do not recognize their power. The politicians, union leaders & lobbyists want the populace to think their votes don't count, but they do.
